NTLM authentication failed Error

If you receive the error:
NTLM authentication failed (code-2146893042)

please follow the instructions below

1. Double click on my computer --> Control Panel --> Network

2. If Microsoft Network Client is not installed, click on Add --> Clients and add the Microsoft Network Client, and then OK all of the way out. (You will most likely need to have your Windows 95 CD/Disks handy).

3. Go into your Dial-up Networking folder (My computer --> dial-up networking), and right click on the Internet connection you use.

4. Select Properties.

5. Click on the Server Types button.

6. Check "Log onto Network" (so this should have a check-mark)

7. Click to clear the Require Encrypted Password check box. (this should NOT have a check-mark)

Then click OK to get all of the way out of the configuration screens and Reboot your computer

If that doesnt work........

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a Web with Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows, the following error message appears:

Unable to complete transaction - the server requested authentication
information (userID/password) using an authentication scheme (NTLM) that
is unsupported by FrontPage.

Error: " NTLM authentication failed"

 

CAUSE

This error is caused when the client for Microsoft Networks is not installed or the installation is corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Install client for Microsoft Networks

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the Network icon.

  3. Click Add.

  4. Highlight Client and click Add.

  5. Highlight Microsoft in the left pane, highlight the client for Microsoft Networks in the right pane, and then click OK.

  6. If prompted, insert your Windows 95 or Windows 98 compact disc, and click OK.

  7. When you are prompted to restart the computer, choose No.

  8. Double-click the client for Microsoft Networks.

  9. Click to select the check box next to Log on to Windows NT Domain, and enter your logon domain.

  10. Click OK twice.

  11. After the installation, you need to restart your computer.

Method 2: Log on to the network using Dial-Up Networking

  1. Double-click My Computer.

  2. Double-click Dial-Up Networking.

  3. Right-click the icon for your connection, and click Properties.

  4. Click the Server Types tab, and select the "Log on to Network" check box.

  5. Click OK.

If that doesnt work........

Issue 1) Log on to Network no checked

  1. Go to My Computer

  2. Go to Dialup Networking

  3. Rightclick on your ISP connection

  4. Select Properties

  5. Click the SERVER TYPE tab

  6. Check the box that says LOG ON TO NETWORK

  7. Click OK at the bottom, then click the second OK to close the properties box

Issue 2) Misc Network settings

  1. Go to My Computer

  2. Go to Control Panel

  3. Doubleclick on Networking

  4. Make sure Client for Microsoft is installed as a service, if not add it using the ADD button.

  5. In the pull down box labeled Primary Logon make sure it says Client for Microsoft

  6. Find in the list of services a line that reads  'TCPIP -----> Dialup Adapter'

  7. Doubleclick on this setting, find the BINDING tab and click on it.  Make sure Client for Microsoft is checked, if it isn't, go ahead and check it.

  8. Click OK at the bottom

  9. Click OK again, the system will probably prompt you to reboot, if it does click yes, if it doesn't, go ahead and reboot the system.
