Flamingos Hatching & The Young

an1.gif (11589 bytes)

Baby flamingos can swim before they are even old enough to leave the nest. They begin to grow feathers after one year. Their bill also begins to curve at this time.

Newly hatched flamingos have whitish color feathers, straight bill, and pink legs. They are very limited to movement at this age and can barely move their bill and wings.

Hatching takes about one day - 36 hours. The chick breaks its own shell with its egg tooth. The egg tooth falls off right after hatching.

Flamingos usually lay just one egg.  The egg is oval in shape just like a chicken and is white in color. Sometimes flamingos lay up to two eggs, but its very rare for both of them to hatch.
